The second subject of this letter is in relation to the Chinese claim and the meeting with Dr. Hsu representing Messrs. Jardine & Company (as agents for the Chinese Government), which was held at the War Office on the 12th August, 1948. claim totals £323,689. 10s. Od. and relates to Invoices Nos. 003, 004, 006, 007 and 008, and Dr. Hsu was told that the War Office accepted this claim in principle, but only at a revised valuation of £185,847. As a result of this meeting further claims by the Chinese were brought to light, increasing the original claim to the sum of £1,295,907. 18s. Od. These additional claims relate- to Messrs. Jardine & Company's Invoices Nos. 005, 009, 010 and 011. From the nature of these claims, however, it does not appear that they are a War Office responsibility to settle, except, perhaps, in the case of Invoice No.005. Ferhaps you will confirm.

The present position regarding the claim presented by Messrs. Jardine & Company is that Dr. Hsu was to inform them of the War Office proposal that these claims should be settled at £185,847, and presumably they are waiting for a decision from the Chinese Ministry of Communications as nothing further has been heard in this respect.
